Tiridates IV

Restoring the protection of Rome over the kingdom of Armenia, Diocletian, the persecutor of the Christians, set on the throne the young Tiridates IV (298-330). In the year 301, forty Roman nuns, led by the Abbess Gayane, hid themselves in Armenia.
Diocletian forced his attentions on the most beautiful of them, the young Hripsime.
Informed by Emperor Diocletian, Tiridate had them arrested. In turn, he also fell for Hripsime and as she rejected his advances, he massacresd the entire community.
According to legend, as punishment for his crime, the king was transformed into a boar. Thirteen years earlier, Tiridates had had the Christian Gregory tortured and then thrown into the pit of Khor Virap.
Tiridates' sister was visited in a dream by an angel who ordered the release of the captive Gregory, saying that he could ask God to cure the king if he converted. Tiridates, in despair, believed, was healed and converted his entire kingdom.
This is how Armenia became the first Christian country.
Gregory was appointed as the head of the Christian Church, and was subsequently named: "The Illuminator".
