Niello

“Nigellum” in Latin. A very old technique of black ornamentation resulting from the sulphuration of silver. A paste-like mixture of lead, copper, silver, sulphur and ammonia salt is deposited on the silver following the design. It is then all placed into an oven. The sulphur content will create various shades from grey to black.

The object is then polished to give it its shine.
