Mappa

In the Roman Empire and Byzantium, a mappa was a big white cloth that the Consul would raise before releasing it into the arena to starting signal of a race. It remains a symbol of consular authority.
Towards the 6th century it was the Emperor who gave the starting signal to games in the arena. He still used his mappa, he is automatically entitled to it and it forms part of the attributes of his rank.
