Erebuni

Erebuni is an ancient fortress of the Kingdom of Urartu, built by Kings Argishti I and Sarduri II at the beginning of the 8th century BC. It is located on the site of Arin Berd, on the outskirts of Yerevan, the current capital. Yerevan probably takes its name after this antique site which was excavated during the 1950s and 1960s by Soviet archaeologists.
The most important monument in Erebuni is the palace. It is structured around a central courtyard with porticoes. There is throne room on the right-hand side, to which access is gained through three small rooms that serve as antechambers. There are warehouses to the north of this courtyard and the living quarters are adjoined by a small chapel in the Urartian style. This one has the particularity of being rectangular.
