ETCHMIADZINE CATHEDRAL

ETCHMIADZINE CATHEDRAL

Built in the 4th century, but remodelled many times until the 17th century, this Cathedral was one of the first domed churches. It was one of the first Christian sanctuaries, built following a dream that St Gregory the Illuminator had, which indicated the place where the first Armenian church should be built. Etchmiadzine is a two-word word meaning “the descent of the only son.” It is the seat of the supreme authority of the Armenian Apostolic Church, comparable to the Vatican for the Catholic Church.
