MONASTERY AND SEVAN LAKE

MONASTERY AND SEVAN LAKE

The Sevan monastery was built in the 9th century. It consists of two churches, the Church of the Apostles on the left in the foreground and the Church of St Mary on the right.

Until the 19th century, these two churches were located on an island, which has now become a peninsula, due to lowering water levels as a result of extensive pumping. However, since pumping ceased a few years ago, the water level has gradually returned the monastery to its former seclusion.
